Arthur Russell (1952-1992)

現代音楽からビートニクス、そしてパンクからディスコ、ガラージュ＆ヒップホップへ。いわばNY周辺でイノベーティヴな音楽の「触媒」としての役割を担った、類まれな才能ある彼の本業はチェロ奏者。エイズで鬼籍へと入った後に改めて評価された一人だが、今回Wikiに書かれているその凄まじい人脈に唖然。Talking Headsもとい、The Modern Lovers関連で名前を知り、彼の"Dinosaur L"1stが手刷りシルクスクリーンだったため購入。だが当時オレはPost Punkに浸っていたため次第に興味を失った訳だが、昨年再発を知り（ボックスでさらに手刷りシルクスクリーン！）改めて購入しハマると云う結果に。本盤は上記ディスコ＆ガラージュ時代な訳だが、Larry Levan、Francois K、Walter Gibbonsの全盛期と相まって最高の一箱。

ソロ時代はCBGBでの"Blondie"を始め様々なバンドの前座から、バンド"Walter Steding and the Dragon People"を経て、Andy Warholのアシスタントやマネージャー、さらに画家としての一面もあるらしい彼の1st Albumは"Blondie"のChris Steinがプロデュース。イカスジャケットと程遠い中途半端な出来が何とも味わい深い。ニューヨーカーはこーゆーカバーやりたがるよな、のA4、A5も微妙な上に、当時N.Y.に住んでいたRobert Frippも全くらしくない出来なのは彼のダークサイドの成せる技か。有名所に好かれたナイーヴさが良くも悪くも良い人なんだと思う。

以前アップした"Dry Dreams / The Jim Carroll Band"に参加。バスキアの映画"DOWNTOWN81(2000)"出演。監督はジャケ写フォトグラファーと同人物か。

Suicide/1st Album (1977)収録の"Frankie Teardrop"は、貧しい工場勤務の男（20歳）が妻と子を殺し自らも命を断つというスケアリーな内容だが、Lydia Lunchによる同曲は其れと同じ暗黒ヴァイヴを持つカバーらしからぬ出来。

"The Detective Meets The Space Alien"とタイトルを追加された"1976 Demo"は、歌詞も併せて変更されている。

また"Fine Time 2 ～A Tribute to New Wave"収録の"ゆらゆら帝国"による同曲は日本語化で怪談的内容にｗ。

"The Alan Vega 70th Birthday Limited Edition EP Series"第一弾は、意外にもBruce Springsteenによるカバーだが、アルバム"Nebraska"の"State Trooper"は彼らの影響から作られたらしい。本盤での収録のように2005年のツアー"Devils & Dust Tour"のラストは此の曲だった様だ。

B2の"Beat The Devil"はNYのバンド。Alan Vegaのお気に入りなのか今回の収録に至る。

通算3枚目のアルバム（ROIRカセットと限定版を除く）は幾分華やかだった前作に比べて再度1stに立ち返った様な印象。其の1stアルバムは1977年リリースだが、何と1970年から現在まで活動している彼ら（Wiki調べ）。Martin Revは不明だが、Alan Vegaは御年73歳。此の頃は50歳だったはずで全身全霊を込めて尊敬に値する。3年前にはAlanの70歳を祝って "Blast First Petite (UK)"より、Bruce Springsteen、Lydia Lunchなど様々なミュージシャンに彼らの楽曲がカバーされた10" EPがシリーズでリリースされた。近々アップの予定。

No Wave×Jazz（Improvisation）のハイブリッドとは目から鱗。FeeliesだったAnton Fierと鉄人Bill Laswellがメインだが、アルバム"No New York"の中でMarsに次いで好きだったDNAのArto Lindsayに加え、John ZornにFred Frithと今ではオールスター勢揃いである。このアルバムから繋がって行った人脈と、さらにジャンルの混血を深めた音楽は、その後数年の間新鮮な驚きを生んだ。
